The Six Habits of Highly Grateful People
By Jeremy Adam Smith on Wednesday September 28th, 2016 Upliftconnect.com How You Can Tell if Someone is Grateful I’m terrible at gratitude. How bad am I? I’m so bad at gratitude that most days, I don’t notice the sunlight on the leaves of the Berkeley oaks as I ride my bike down the street. I forget to be thankful for the guy who hand-brews that delicious cup of coffee I drink mid-way through every weekday morning. I don’t even know the dude’s name! I usually take for granted that I have legs to walk on, eyes to see with, arms I can use to hug my son. I forget my son! Well, I don’t actually forget about him, at least as a physical presence; I generally remember to pick him up from school and feed him dinner. But as I face the quotidian slings and arrows of parenthood, I forget all the time how much he’s changed my life for the better. Gratitude (and its sibling, appreciation) is the mental tool we use to remind ourselves of the good stuff. It’s a lens that helps us to see the things that don’t make it onto our lists of problems to […]
Wopida: A Global Ceremony of Gratitude
By Jacob Devaney on Thursday December 8th, 2016 Upliftconnect.com Will You Join A Wopida Prayer For Standing Rock? It is time for humans to act as a unified force of nature, to live life as a prayer of gratitude and service for the Earth and for future generations. It is time for a Global Wopida. The Native American Dakota people have a special ceremony used for times of difficulty. It is called Wopida, or Wopila in the Lakota dialect. Wopida is a sacred sharing of gratitude, a connecting with all beings including the Great Spirit through giving thanks. It is is an expression of wisdom, strength, and compassion. Our native allies have survived centuries of genocide yet they still carry this sacred teaching that helps us navigate turbulent times. This is the core teaching of Wopida: This spiritual understanding of Wopida requires each of us to live with honor, compassion, love, respect and harmony with all life. This spiritual understanding recognizes that the Hurt of One is the Hurt of All and the Honor of One is the Honor of All and that we are intimately related as an integral part of all Life. We are all relatives! – Hereditary Chief, Phil Lane Jr. The Wopida […]
How to Criticize with Kindness
By Maria Popova on Saturday February 4th, 2017 Upliftconnect.com Seeking Truth Instead of an Opponent In disputes upon moral or scientific points, let your aim be to come at truth, not to conquer your opponent. So you never shall be at a loss in losing the argument, and gaining a new discovery. Said Arthur Martine, in his magnificent 1866 guide to the art of conversation. Of course, this isn’t what happens most of the time when we argue, both online and off, but especially when we deploy the artillery of our righteousness from behind the comfortable shield of the keyboard. That form of ‘criticism’ — which is really a menace of reacting rather than responding — is worthy of Mark Twain’s memorable remark: “The critic’s symbol should be the tumble-bug: he deposits his egg in somebody else’s dung, otherwise he could not hatch it.” Criticism online can easily perpetuate, until someone gets ‘shut down’. A Better Approach To Criticism But it needn’t be this way — there are ways to be critical while remaining charitable, of aiming not to ‘conquer’ but to ‘come at truth,’ not to be right at all costs but to understand and advance the collective understanding. […]
How to Ditch the Drama in Your Relationships
By Christine Carter on Tuesday August 28th, 2018 UpliftConnect.com Three Simple Ways to Avoid Unnecessary Conflict You are unimaginably cruel. I could never have done something like that to you. One of my clients—we’ll call her Sara—received that in a nasty text from her ex-husband, who was angry because their daughter, a young adult, had excluded him from a milestone event. Instead of confronting their daughter, the ex-husband was pinning his daughter’s actions on Sara. Understandably, the accusation consumed Sara. Even when we aren’t provoked by such high-emotion personal conflict, these days it’s hard to escape the daily dramas playing out all around us. Personal dramas are served to us via text and email—and if our own lives are peaceful, we need look no further than Twitter for conflicts, or our smartphones for the latest metaphorical (or literal) trainwreck. Most of us are, at the very least, distracted by drama. Despite our best intentions, we have trouble looking away. Biologically, we are hardwired to love the novelty, stimulation, and social information that a constant feed of drama provides. But the 24/7 drama isn’t pointing us towards meaningful lives. And it keeps us from the stillness and reflection and deep conversation that […]
How to Silence Your Inner Critic and Grow Stronger
By Sara Fabian on Friday August 3rd, 2018 UpliftConnext.com Six Practical Ways to Stop your Negative Self-Talk When there’s no enemy within, the enemy outside can do us no harm. – African proverb Have you ever heard an inner voice telling you disempowering things, like “I don’t think I can make it,” “What if I fail?”, “I’m not that smart,” ”I’ll never have that,” “This is too hard,” “This is too big for me,” “It’s impossible,” or “It’s too good to be true” ? If this rings a bell for you, know that this was the voice of your Inner Critic. What is Your Inner Critic? It is that voice in your mind that often speaks to you when you want to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone. It is a voice of fear. Its purpose is to keep you in the safe zone and protect you from any possible emotional injuries like judgment, rejection, blame or shame. It is an internal resistance to change and the unknown, and the main reason for you playing small and not daring to go for your dreams. Your inner critic does an excellent job at keeping you safe; however, it […]
We are a behavioral healthcare company with facilities located across the southeast aimed at setting the standard in addiction treatment. We provide real solutions to the addiction epidemic by deploying systems of care to communities with the greatest need. We believe every person and their family should be afforded a chance to recover, no matter their circumstances.
Substance use disorders are among the costliest medical and public health problems in the United States, with 23 million individuals needing treatment annually, but only 25% of them receiving it. Integrative Mental Health (IMH), which embraces a bio-psycho-spiritual model, is playing a role in how we treat addiction and substance use issues. Holistic treatment centers incorporate mainstream approaches, such as psychotherapy and psychosocial interventions, as well as alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, herbal and nutritional medicine, yoga, and meditation. A holistic center can treat addiction and provide tools that promote whole-body health through this integrative approach. In combination with standard treatment practices, such as CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and medical detoxification, a holistic rehabilitation center offers services that aim to foster comprehensive health: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. Holistic treatments might include: Tennis, swimming, yoga, and other forms of exercise. Acupuncture, massage, and herbal medicines. Nutritional counseling. Guided meditation. Opportunities to attend church, temple, or another religious establishment. Spiritual growth classes. Equine therapy. Rock climbing. Tai chi. Alternative healing techniques such as Reiki and rolfing. Outdoor excursions, such as beach walks. Vision boards and imagery. DETOXIFICATION Detox facilities provide a safe, medically supervised setting to help teens come off of drugs […]
How The Pouyan Method Can Cure You For those seeking to get healed, you need to understand after years of substance abuse, and poor nutrition, the brain’s neuropathways and neurotransmitters have suffered significant damage. This damage in the brain is one of the main reasons why individuals relapse, and requires significant healing to occur to return the person to a pre-addicted state. When people use benzodiazepines for an extended period of time, the GABA receptor becomes significantly saturated. Upon cessation of the medication they become anxious, irritable, depressed or a combination of the above due to the lack of GABA production. The Holistic Sanctuary powerful proprietary IV formulas, promotes neurogenesis within the hippocampus creating stimulation and reproduction of natural GABA production. Basically the IV’s will reset and repair the function of GABA and glutamate in the brain responsible for brain shocks and anxiety while coming off medication. It has been documented that the adult brain is capable of neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to repair itself through formulating new neurons. The propriety IV formulas promote neuroplasticity by giving the brain all the vital amino acids for the brain, vitamins, minerals, micronutrients it needs to thrive and continue to heal itself from years of abuse. The term, Holistic, refers to “whole” as opposed to “parts”. So what does holistic mean in terms of drug treatment? Holistic drug treatment treats the whole body. Addiction is a three-fold disease. It is a spiritual malady, a physical allergy, and a mental obsession. Holistic drug treatment treats the whole person – spiritually, physically, and mentally. Holistic drug treatment is a vital part of treatment here at Palm Partners. We believe in treating and healing the mind, body and spirit as separate but unified parts in the journey towards recovery. East Meets West I have moved along from my 40-year mainstream practice in psychotherapy to founding an alternative, non-profit institute, the Tao Studies Center, in Framingham, MA. The therapy work here is the study and practice of Chinese health and self-healing, especially through the wisdom of the Tao, as put forth in the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, an early and unwitting purveyor of Taoist philosophy — and also through the study and use of the many Tao-influenced disciplines evolved and practiced in China and throughout the world for centuries. Some of these practices include the popular self-discovery art taught in I Ching: the Book of Changes; the practices of Tai Chi and Qi Gong; the immense body of knowledge comprised in Chinese Medicine, Acupressure, and Acupuncture; the relational and loving arts in the Kama Sutra; and the elevation of music, poetry, and visual arts so that they are key elements in modulating states-of-consciousness and states-of-health. Those who are musicians and artists may find this arts/self-discovery work to be especially deep, exciting, and self-revealing. “Taoism” is not a religion, or some god that requires worship and prostration. It is a philosophy for health in daily life, minimizing or moving through conflict, and harmonizing with nature, often in surprising ways. […]

Recovering from addiction is a multi-faceted journey that involves healing the mind, body and spirit. Healing goes beyond detox and medical treatment—it’s complex and all-encompassing, and a holistic rehab approach gets to the root of addiction. What does holistic drug rehab involve? What does a holistic recovery center offer that other typical rehab centers might not? At Beachway, our holistic recovery program gives you the tools for long-term recovery. We believe with our approach, Beachway can be the last addiction treatment you seek. That’s because we address underlying issues that can trigger addictive behaviors and support you with healthy, positive strategies so you can live a full, sober life. What is Holistic Rehab? Holistic addiction treatment is customized, multifaceted and gives you a range of options for healing physically, mentally and spiritually. We don’t believe in cookie-cutter drug or alcohol rehabilitation—forcing people into a “proven” program. Because the reality is, we all come to addiction for different reasons. Our life experiences, mental health, job and family circumstances and much more contribute to the disease. A holistic rehab program treats the disease, not just the symptoms. Our approach is holistic, and we know that’s a term you might hear often. But we […]

We want a relationship with our partner that includes deep intimacy and mutual support. This is an ongoing challenge which takes real focus and attention, as well as a willingness to work through struggles involving difficult emotions. I have found Imago Relationship Therapy to be an excellent means for helping couples to heal and grow. I create a safe therapy space in which partners feel able to say what they are thinking and feeling to each other. Using Imago Therapy I structure the partners’ dialogue in a way that each feels they are […]

I am an empathic human being and a highly trained Certified Psychoanalyst, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Credentialed Alcoholism Counselor. I help others manage and resolve difficulties of the heart — love, loss and work during significant life changes; for example, career change, death/illness in family, divorce, early “recovery,” relapse with addiction(s), criminal arrests, loss of work, etc. I am committed to providing high-quality professional assessment and counseling/psychotherapy to people who have not accessed or have had prior unsatisfactory experiences with psychotherapy. I am also committed to travel the lengthy road of psychoanalysis with people who want to take this voyage. A second arm of my private practice is “Second Opinions”: Some consumers are in a “stalemate” in their present “therapy”– where there is a serious impasse and “work” is forfeited. I consult with individuals who can no longer productively work in their current therapy, oftentimes beginning to resolve major impasses. On occasion, the individual’s therapist volunteers to be part of this process. In some cases, fruitful work is resumed. In other instances, a decision to leave the current therapy ensues. My interest in psychotherapy is borne by helping clients learn about themselves in seeing things differently—not changing their world, but having new eyes. By engaging […]

I see my job as helping you articulate your reasons for seeking therapy, to understand the source of your issues, and to find strategies that bring relief. My style is interactive, with an emphasis on caring and supportive feedback. I expect the client to establish the agenda for each session, trusting that the client knows best what needs to be addressed in any given session. I emphasize psychoeducation about the role of, and differences between, thoughts, feelings and behaviors. My theoretical orientation can be described as Integral, an approach that’s based on the work of Ken Wilber and best fits under the transpersonal label. My work is further informed by Buddhist philosophy and psychology. First off, you should know that I don’t “believe in” psychic phenomena or the “paranormal.” There is no such thing as the “paranormal” — psychic energy, spiritual energy, healing energy — these are not “paranormal” things, these are just normal things. Perhaps they are more difficult to sense tangibly, but they are normal nonetheless. I don’t “believe in” the “paranormal” for two important reasons: 1. Those who experience for themselves don’t need to “believe.” Belief is an external idea, whereby we put our faith in something we can not sense. I have faith, but I don’t need to “believe” in psi — I have experienced it myself. And, believe it or not, so have you. 2. There is nothing “paranormal” about the paranormal. What we consider the “paranormal” because of what the media, our peers, and society has told us — is not paranormal at all. It is actually just normal. Paranormal literally means ‘side-by-side with the normal.’ The ‘para’ prefix works the same way as in the word “Paralegal,” a person who works side-by-side with a lawyer. But normal is normal, and the so-called “Paranormal” implies that rational, normal parts of life aren’t normal, which they are. Confused yet? […]

My path is helping you to find and follow yours. I do readings. I read energy. I work with energy. I experience a ‘knowing’ from information I receive from energy, emotions, and Spirit – and for me, I consider this a type of seeing. Among other things, this ability allows me to understand deeply in a short time, what has taken you years to develop as a blockage in you. I’m also able to feel how you are in comparison with the life flow – if the reason “it’s not happening for you” is because you are in some state of resistance. I’m a psychic empath and intuitive and so I’m wired in a physical and meta-physical sense to be a conduit, or channel for Spirit. These gifts relate to energy and electro-magnetism, extra-sensory and the etheric-spiritual. With training, study and practice, I learned to wield my gifts and let go to Spirit. As I improved myself, improved my “being-ness”, I would see and be shown more. This is my practice. I am called to share it with you. The goal for this work is to raise consciousness. If we change ourselves, everything changes. What flows through me comes from […]

Developed by John Pierrakos, MD., Core Energetics is a marriage of Body Psychotherapy and Spiritual Development. The work brings consciousness to how we block our energy and recreate defense patterns adapted in childhood that keep us limited and disempowered. The core process helps us see how our world view is to a large extent a function of many of these blocked energy patterns, and so we keep recreating similar situations and relational dynamics that leave us frustrated. Awareness is not enough, we also need to mobilize our physical energy (life-force) differently in order to make lasting changes in both our inner world and our outer experience of life. Work with the body is critical in changing our experience of embodiment, because our defenses, belief systems, coping mechanisms, and typical emotional responses are not just psychological, they are also somatic and powerfully anchored in the physical body. Targeted body techniques open consciousness to suppressed feelings and engage the energy system in ways that allow us to go beyond our “comfort” zone. The Core work taps into blocked sources of energy that can then be integrated and grounded. This creates an expanded sense of who we are to more fully embrace our […]

Majica Phillips is a creative visionary who’s passions led her to explore art, music, and dance as a therapeutic vehicle. She works with couples and individuals who have a desire to have deeper connections, intimacy, and communication with their loved ones. “Sex Positivity isn’t about liking sex, liking kinky sex, having a lot of sex, or having a lot of partners. Sex positivity is about respecting other people, whether their sexual choices are the same as yours. It’s about not judging people because of their sexual desires, practices or histories. It’s about celebrating people’s courage in creating the sex lives that work for them in the face of cultural myths, shame, misinformation, and trauma that are used to control us. Sex-positivity is the belief that the only valid measure of a sexual act is the consent, pleasure, and well-being of the people who do it or are affected by it. Anything else is your own projection.” — Charlie Glickman, Ph.D
