The Power of Sharing Stories
The Power of Sharing Stories By Liz Brazile on Wednesday November 28th, 2018 UpliftConnect.com Image: Unknown Can Storytelling Improve Your Mental Health? As Joe Clemons was growing up, he used to listen to family members share stories. Some stories were imaginative and rousing, while others were more monotonous. Nevertheless, hearing accounts of how his elders experienced life before him was a form of bonding and had a large part in shaping his selfhood—especially the stories his father told him about coming of age as a black man at the height of the civil rights movement. “A lot of those stories are tied to my identity,” Clemons said. Though his father wasn’t particularly fiery in his delivery, his career as a preacher meant oral storytelling was a natural element of his parenting. Clemons now attributes his own career as a poet and spoken word artist, in part, to those moments. Any story he told was to give you better context to understand the world you’re in, and that’s what I try to do when I’m writing. Storytelling and Our Sense of Self Exchanging stories with family members is not an inconsequential pastime. Research published in Emory University’s Journal of Family Life […]
Powerful Thoughts to Overcome Anxiety
Powerful Thoughts to Overcome Anxiety By Mark Denicola on Friday December 7th, 2018 Upliftconnect.com Image: Unknown Five Ways to Reduce Your Anxiety for Good As a former severe anxiety sufferer, I beyond sympathize with those of you that are still entrenched in the unpredictable, overwhelming and often-times flat out scary experience that is anxiety. For several years, anxiety was my unwanted sidekick that at its peak not only prevented me from properly eating and sleeping, but convinced me that I would never again be able to live another minute of my life without it. But as the restless nights, unhealthy thoughts, and panic attacks continued to mount, I eventually reached a point where I knew that the reality I was experiencing simply wasn’t sustainable. I personally committed to seek out every resource I could to learn and apply in hopes of conquering anxiety without the use of medication–since the side effects always have, and continue to, terrify me. While much of what I came across simply didn’t work, there also was a great deal that did. But more than anything, what surprised me about my journey was how much of it was rooted in how I perceived and approached the mental health condition that impacts an estimated 10% […]
The Greater Purpose of Your Connections
The Greater Purpose of Your Connections By Ocean Whitehawk on Thursday January 17th, 2019 Uplift Connect Every Person and Every Experience Serves a Purpose In the infinite wisdom of your soul, you chose precisely the folks you deemed appropriate to be your parents. From their genetic make-up to the kind of people they are, each facet was accurately considered before you made your loving choice. This is to ensure that they provide you with the necessary conditioning that will allow you to master what you’re here to learn. Know that no matter how it may look to the human perspective, every experience is valid–even those that seem negative. From the viewpoint of souls, there are no victims, only agreed contracts to serve one another in the name of Love. Your spiritual growth and the expansion of your infinite nature remain the only agenda in God’s benevolent eyes. You will see that your so-called enemies are simply your soul buddies in disguise, loving you so much that they have agreed to play the ‘bad guy,’ in order that you excel in your learning as a soul in a human vehicle. Most of all, they are here to help you master the […]
The Six Habits of Highly Grateful People
By Jeremy Adam Smith on Wednesday September 28th, 2016 Upliftconnect.com How You Can Tell if Someone is Grateful I’m terrible at gratitude. How bad am I? I’m so bad at gratitude that most days, I don’t notice the sunlight on the leaves of the Berkeley oaks as I ride my bike down the street. I forget to be thankful for the guy who hand-brews that delicious cup of coffee I drink mid-way through every weekday morning. I don’t even know the dude’s name! I usually take for granted that I have legs to walk on, eyes to see with, arms I can use to hug my son. I forget my son! Well, I don’t actually forget about him, at least as a physical presence; I generally remember to pick him up from school and feed him dinner. But as I face the quotidian slings and arrows of parenthood, I forget all the time how much he’s changed my life for the better. Gratitude (and its sibling, appreciation) is the mental tool we use to remind ourselves of the good stuff. It’s a lens that helps us to see the things that don’t make it onto our lists of problems to […]
Wopida: A Global Ceremony of Gratitude
By Jacob Devaney on Thursday December 8th, 2016 Upliftconnect.com Will You Join A Wopida Prayer For Standing Rock? It is time for humans to act as a unified force of nature, to live life as a prayer of gratitude and service for the Earth and for future generations. It is time for a Global Wopida. The Native American Dakota people have a special ceremony used for times of difficulty. It is called Wopida, or Wopila in the Lakota dialect. Wopida is a sacred sharing of gratitude, a connecting with all beings including the Great Spirit through giving thanks. It is is an expression of wisdom, strength, and compassion. Our native allies have survived centuries of genocide yet they still carry this sacred teaching that helps us navigate turbulent times. This is the core teaching of Wopida: This spiritual understanding of Wopida requires each of us to live with honor, compassion, love, respect and harmony with all life. This spiritual understanding recognizes that the Hurt of One is the Hurt of All and the Honor of One is the Honor of All and that we are intimately related as an integral part of all Life. We are all relatives! – Hereditary Chief, Phil Lane Jr. The Wopida […]
East Meets West I have moved along from my 40-year mainstream practice in psychotherapy to founding an alternative, non-profit institute, the Tao Studies Center, in Framingham, MA. The therapy work here is the study and practice of Chinese health and self-healing, especially through the wisdom of the Tao, as put forth in the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, an early and unwitting purveyor of Taoist philosophy — and also through the study and use of the many Tao-influenced disciplines evolved and practiced in China and throughout the world for centuries. Some of these practices include the popular self-discovery art taught in I Ching: the Book of Changes; the practices of Tai Chi and Qi Gong; the immense body of knowledge comprised in Chinese Medicine, Acupressure, and Acupuncture; the relational and loving arts in the Kama Sutra; and the elevation of music, poetry, and visual arts so that they are key elements in modulating states-of-consciousness and states-of-health. Those who are musicians and artists may find this arts/self-discovery work to be especially deep, exciting, and self-revealing. “Taoism” is not a religion, or some god that requires worship and prostration. It is a philosophy for health in daily life, minimizing or moving through conflict, and harmonizing with nature, often in surprising ways. […]

We want a relationship with our partner that includes deep intimacy and mutual support. This is an ongoing challenge which takes real focus and attention, as well as a willingness to work through struggles involving difficult emotions. I have found Imago Relationship Therapy to be an excellent means for helping couples to heal and grow. I create a safe therapy space in which partners feel able to say what they are thinking and feeling to each other. Substance use disorders are among the costliest medical and public health problems in the United States, with 23 million individuals needing treatment annually, but only 25% of them receiving it. Integrative Mental Health (IMH), which embraces a bio-psycho-spiritual model, is playing a role in how we treat addiction and substance use issues. Holistic treatment centers incorporate mainstream approaches, such as psychotherapy and psychosocial interventions, as well as alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, herbal and nutritional medicine, yoga, and meditation. A holistic center can treat addiction and provide tools that promote whole-body health through this integrative approach. In combination with standard treatment practices, such as CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and medical detoxification, a holistic rehabilitation center offers services that aim to foster comprehensive health: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. Holistic treatments might include: Tennis, swimming, yoga, and other forms of exercise. Acupuncture, massage, and herbal medicines. Nutritional counseling. Guided meditation. Opportunities to attend church, temple, or another religious establishment. Spiritual growth classes. Equine therapy. Rock climbing. Tai chi. Alternative healing techniques such as Reiki and rolfing. Outdoor excursions, such as beach walks. Vision boards and imagery. DETOXIFICATION Detox facilities provide a safe, medically supervised setting to help teens come off of drugs […]

The term, Holistic, refers to “whole” as opposed to “parts”. So what does holistic mean in terms of drug treatment? Holistic drug treatment treats the whole body. Addiction is a three-fold disease. It is a spiritual malady, a physical allergy, and a mental obsession. Holistic drug treatment treats the whole person – spiritually, physically, and mentally. Holistic drug treatment is a vital part of treatment here at Palm Partners. We believe in treating and healing the mind, body and spirit as separate but unified parts in the journey towards recovery. Holistic drug treatment therapy at Palm Partners consist of meditation, spirituality, zumba, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, private massage and chiropractic services. These treatments are designed to help clients relax and treat their body at the same time they are treating their minds. Research supports holistic drug treatment programs:Alcohol treatment that incorporated exercise into their programs reported that clients perceived the physical activity as beneficial in tension and stress reduction, a more positive outlook, and increased self-esteem. The preliminary data indicated that exercise-based interventions are may be well-received by those early in recovery from alcoholism. – Study: Exercise attitudes and behaviors among persons in treatment for alcohol use disorders. How The Pouyan Method Can Cure You For those seeking to get healed, you need to understand after years of substance abuse, and poor nutrition, the brain’s neuropathways and neurotransmitters have suffered significant damage. This damage in the brain is one of the main reasons why individuals relapse, and requires significant healing to occur to return the person to a pre-addicted state. When people use benzodiazepines for an extended period of time, the GABA receptor becomes significantly saturated. Upon cessation of the medication they become anxious, irritable, depressed or a combination of the above due to the lack of GABA production. The Holistic Sanctuary powerful proprietary IV formulas, promotes neurogenesis within the hippocampus creating stimulation and reproduction of natural GABA production. Basically the IV’s will reset and repair the function of GABA and glutamate in the brain responsible for brain shocks and anxiety while coming off medication. It has been documented that the adult brain is capable of neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to repair itself through formulating new neurons. The propriety IV formulas promote neuroplasticity by giving the brain all the vital amino acids for the brain, vitamins, minerals, micronutrients it needs to thrive and continue to heal itself from years of abuse. Recovering from addiction is a multi-faceted journey that involves healing the mind, body and spirit. Healing goes beyond detox and medical treatment—it’s complex and all-encompassing, and a holistic rehab approach gets to the root of addiction. What does holistic drug rehab involve? What does a holistic recovery center offer that other typical rehab centers might not? At Beachway, our holistic recovery program gives you the tools for long-term recovery. Our life experiences, mental health, job and family circumstances and much more contribute to the disease. A holistic rehab program treats the disease, not just the symptoms. Our approach is holistic, and we know that’s a term you might hear often. But we […]

Majica Phillips is a creative visionary who’s passions led her to explore art, music, and dance as a therapeutic vehicle. She works with couples and individuals who have a desire to have deeper connections, intimacy, and communication with their loved ones. “Sex Positivity isn’t about liking sex, liking kinky sex, having a lot of sex, or having a lot of partners. Sex positivity is about respecting other people, whether their sexual choices are the same as yours. It’s about not judging people because of their sexual desires, practices or histories. It’s about celebrating people’s courage in creating the sex lives that work for them in the face of cultural myths, shame, misinformation, and trauma that are used to control us. Sex-positivity is the belief that the only valid measure of a sexual act is the consent, pleasure, and well-being of the people who do it or are affected by it. I am an empathic human being and a highly trained Certified Psychoanalyst, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Credentialed Alcoholism Counselor. I help others manage and resolve difficulties of the heart — love, loss and work during significant life changes; for example, career change, death/illness in family, divorce, early “recovery,” relapse with addiction(s), criminal arrests, loss of work, etc. I am committed to providing high-quality professional assessment and counseling/psychotherapy to people who have not accessed or have had prior unsatisfactory experiences with psychotherapy. I am also committed to travel the lengthy road of psychoanalysis with people who want to take this voyage. A second arm of my private practice is “Second Opinions”: Some consumers are in a “stalemate” in their present “therapy”– where there is a serious impasse and “work” is forfeited. I consult with individuals who can no longer productively work in their current therapy, oftentimes beginning to resolve major impasses. On occasion, the individual’s therapist volunteers to be part of this process. In some cases, fruitful work is resumed. In other instances, a decision to leave the current therapy ensues. My interest in psychotherapy is borne by helping clients learn about themselves in seeing things differently—not changing their world, but having new eyes. By engaging […]

I was not born grateful. I was born into a world full of fear, disappointment and self-loathing. That same world was (and is) full of teachers who did their best to help change my vision, my perspective – both of the world and my true self. However, I was not ready or able to take what they were offering. I used to say, “I wish I had listened to (fill in the blank) more closely. I wish I had been more willing to learn and change.” It was by Grace that I finally heard someone say something so revealing about themselves that I saw myself in their story – and I knew that the time for regret was over and the time for action had come. Since that time I have found myself filled with more gratitude, love and enthusiasm for life that I could ever have imagined. How I have come to this place is what I want to share with you. I’m offering my time now to those who have already disappointed themselves and carry regret because of their own inability or unwillingness to act. If you wish you had listened, responded, acted, reciprocated, loved in return; now is the time […]

Developed by John Pierrakos, MD., Core Energetics is a marriage of Body Psychotherapy and Spiritual Development. The work brings consciousness to how we block our energy and recreate defense patterns adapted in childhood that keep us limited and disempowered. The core process helps us see how our world view is to a large extent a function of many of these blocked energy patterns, and so we keep recreating similar situations and relational dynamics that leave us frustrated. Awareness is not enough, we also need to mobilize our physical energy (life-force) differently in order to make lasting changes in both our inner world and our outer experience of life. Work with the body is critical in changing our experience of embodiment, because our defenses, belief systems, coping mechanisms, and typical emotional responses are not just psychological, they are also somatic and powerfully anchored in the physical body. Targeted body techniques open consciousness to suppressed feelings and engage the energy system in ways that allow us to go beyond our “comfort” zone. The Core work taps into blocked sources of energy that can then be integrated and grounded. This creates an expanded sense of who we are to more fully embrace our […]
