East Meets West I have moved along from my 40-year mainstream practice in psychotherapy to founding an alternative, non-profit institute, the Tao Studies Center, in Framingham, MA. The therapy work here is the study and practice of Chinese health and self-healing, especially through the wisdom of the Tao, as put forth in the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, an early and unwitting purveyor of Taoist philosophy — and also through the study and use of the many Tao-influenced disciplines evolved and practiced in China and throughout the world for centuries. Some of these practices include the popular self-discovery art taught in I Ching: the Book of Changes; the practices of Tai Chi and Qi Gong; the immense body of knowledge comprised in Chinese Medicine, Acupressure, and Acupuncture; the relational and loving arts in the Kama Sutra; and the elevation of music, poetry, and visual arts so that they are key elements in modulating states-of-consciousness and states-of-health. Those who are musicians and artists may find this arts/self-discovery work to be especially deep, exciting, and self-revealing. “Taoism” is not a religion, or some god that requires worship and prostration. It is a philosophy for health in daily life, minimizing or moving through conflict, and harmonizing with nature, often in surprising ways. […]

Developed by John Pierrakos, MD., Core Energetics is a marriage of Body Psychotherapy and Spiritual Development. The work brings consciousness to how we block our energy and recreate defense patterns adapted in childhood that keep us limited and disempowered. The core process helps us see how our world view is to a large extent a function of many of these blocked energy patterns, and so we keep recreating similar situations and relational dynamics that leave us frustrated. Awareness is not enough, we also need to mobilize our physical energy (life-force) differently in order to make lasting changes in both our inner world and our outer experience of life. Work with the body is critical in changing our experience of embodiment, because our defenses, belief systems, coping mechanisms, and typical emotional responses are not just psychological, they are also somatic and powerfully anchored in the physical body. Targeted body techniques open consciousness to suppressed feelings and engage the energy system in ways that allow us to go beyond our “comfort” zone. The Core work taps into blocked sources of energy that can then be integrated and grounded. This creates an expanded sense of who we are to more fully embrace our […]

Majica Phillips is a creative visionary who’s passions led her to explore art, music, and dance as a therapeutic vehicle. She works with couples and individuals who have a desire to have deeper connections, intimacy, and communication with their loved ones. “Sex Positivity isn’t about liking sex, liking kinky sex, having a lot of sex, or having a lot of partners. Sex positivity is about respecting other people, whether their sexual choices are the same as yours. It’s about not judging people because of their sexual desires, practices or histories. It’s about celebrating people’s courage in creating the sex lives that work for them in the face of cultural myths, shame, misinformation, and trauma that are used to control us. Sex-positivity is the belief that the only valid measure of a sexual act is the consent, pleasure, and well-being of the people who do it or are affected by it. Anything else is your own projection.” — Charlie Glickman, Ph.D

I approach each client with the assumption that you are coming to me with an intention to alleviate discontentment or suffering. I see my job as helping you articulate your reasons for seeking therapy, to understand the source of your issues, and to find strategies that bring relief. My style is interactive, with an emphasis on caring and supportive feedback. I expect the client to establish the agenda for each session, trusting that the client knows best what needs to be addressed in any given session. I emphasize psychoeducation about the role of, and differences between, thoughts, feelings and behaviors. My theoretical orientation can be described as Integral, an approach that’s based on the work of Ken Wilber and best fits under the transpersonal label. My work is further informed by Buddhist philosophy and psychology. Areas of specialization include GLBT issues, including coming out, external and internalized homophobia, gender identity and transitioning. I also specialize in compulsivity and addictions, including all areas of substance abuse, gambling, and sexual compulsivity.
