East Meets West I have moved along from my 40-year mainstream practice in psychotherapy to founding an alternative, non-profit institute, the Tao Studies Center, in Framingham, MA. The therapy work here is the study and practice of Chinese health and self-healing, especially through the wisdom of the Tao, as put forth in the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, an early and unwitting purveyor of Taoist philosophy — and also through the study and use of the many Tao-influenced disciplines evolved and practiced in China and throughout the world for centuries. Some of these practices include the popular self-discovery art taught in I Ching: the Book of Changes; the practices of Tai Chi and Qi Gong; the immense body of knowledge comprised in Chinese Medicine, Acupressure, and Acupuncture; the relational and loving arts in the Kama Sutra; and the elevation of music, poetry, and visual arts so that they are key elements in modulating states-of-consciousness and states-of-health. Those who are musicians and artists may find this arts/self-discovery work to be especially deep, exciting, and self-revealing. “Taoism” is not a religion, or some god that requires worship and prostration. It is a philosophy for health in daily life, minimizing or moving through conflict, and harmonizing with nature, often in surprising ways. […]

Katz, LCSW 347 Fifth Avenue (34 Street), Rm. 1401, New York City 917.359.5375 jerryskatz@nyc.rr.com Licensed Psychotherapist Certified Imago Relationship Couples Therapist International Speaker and Presenter “As a gay man in a long term and satisfying relationship, I understand what is involved in finding and keeping a partner, the stages of ongoing relationships, and the particular struggles – external and internalized – of same sex partners.” When couples come in, the partners are often feeling that the person they looked to for understanding, support, and love has instead turned into a critical, withholding, and disappointing other – almost an adversary. We want a relationship with our partner that includes deep intimacy and mutual support. This is an ongoing challenge which takes real focus and attention, as well as a willingness to work through struggles involving difficult emotions. I have found Imago Relationship Therapy to be an excellent means for helping couples to heal and grow. I create a safe therapy space in which partners feel able to say what they are thinking and feeling to each other. Using Imago Therapy I structure the partners’ dialogue in a way that each feels they are […]

The term, Holistic, refers to “whole” as opposed to “parts”. So what does holistic mean in terms of drug treatment? Holistic drug treatment treats the whole body. Addiction is a three-fold disease. It is a spiritual malady, a physical allergy, and a mental obsession. Holistic drug treatment treats the whole person – spiritually, physically, and mentally. Holistic drug treatment is a vital part of treatment here at Palm Partners. We believe in treating and healing the mind, body and spirit as separate but unified parts in the journey towards recovery. Holistic drug treatment therapy at Palm Partners consist of meditation, spirituality, zumba, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, private massage and chiropractic services. These treatments are designed to help clients relax and treat their body at the same time they are treating their minds. Research supports holistic drug treatment programs:Alcohol treatment that incorporated exercise into their programs reported that clients perceived the physical activity as beneficial in tension and stress reduction, a more positive outlook, and increased self-esteem. The preliminary data indicated that exercise-based interventions are may be well-received by those early in recovery from alcoholism. – Study: Exercise attitudes and behaviors among persons in treatment for alcohol use disorders.
