ACC (Associate Certified Coach)
As a hair puller since the age of 15 and now in remission, I know the shame and suffering often attached to this disorder. As I have learned on my journey of trying everything from CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), HRT (Habit Reversal Training) and ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy), we can’t change a behavior unless we understand how it addresses our anxiety. Though Trichotillomania and Dermatillomania are complex and carry a genetic component, shifting our awareness and gaining knowledge can shift our behavior. Educating parents and other family members on how to manage their own behavior around their son or daughter’s BFRB is also a key component.
